The load-distance balancing problem

چکیده
Problems dealing with assignment of clients to servers have been widely studied. However, they usually do not model the fact that the delay incurred by a client is a function of both the distance to the assigned server and the load on this server, under a given assignment. We study a problem referred to as the Load-Distance Balancing problem (or LDB), where the objective is assigning a set of clients to a set of given servers. Each client suffers a delay that is the sum of the distance to its server and the congestion delay at this server, a non-decreasing function of the number of clients assigned to the server. We address two flavors of LDB – the first one seeking to minimize the maximum incurred delay, and the second one targeted for minimizing the average delay. For the first variation, we present hardness results, a best possible approximation algorithm, and an optimal algorithm for a special case of linear placement of clients and servers. For the second one, an optimal polynomial-time algorithm is presented.

Abstract: Load balancing and phase balancing are important complement to reconfiguration of the feeder and the network. In the distribution automation ,these issues must be solved continuously and simultaneously to ensure the optimal performance of a distribution network.Distribution network imbalance has various consequences such as increase in power losses, voltage drop, cost increase, etc. In th...

Proper planning of assembly lines is one of the production managers’ concerns at the tactical level so that it would be possible to use the machine capacity, reduce operating costs and deliver customer orders on time. The lack of an efficient method in balancing assembly line can create threatening problems for manufacturing organizations. The use of assembly line balancing methods cannot balan...
متن کاملOn Traffic Load Distribution and Load Balancing in Dense Wireless Multihop Networks
We study the load balancing problem in a dense wireless multihop network, where a typical path consists of a large number of hops, that is, the spatial scales of a typical distance between source and destination and mean distance between the neighboring nodes are strongly separated. In this limit, we present a general framework for analyzing the traffic load resulting from a given set of paths ...
متن کاملOn Load Balancing in Multicomputer/Distributed Systems Equipped with Circuit or Cut-Through Switching Capability
For multicomputer or distributed systems that use circuit switching, wormhole routing, or virtual cut-through, 2 the communication overhead and the message delivery time depend largely upon link contention rather than upon the distance between the source and the destination. That is, a larger communication overhead or a longer delivery delay occurs to a message when it traverses a route with he...
متن کاملLoad Balancing Approaches for Web Servers: A Survey of Recent Trends
Numerous works has been done for load balancing of web servers in grid environment. Reason behinds popularity of grid environment is to allow accessing distributed resources which are located at remote locations. For effective utilization, load must be balanced among all resources. Importance of load balancing is discussed by distinguishing the system between without load balancing and with loa...
